Empowerment Status of Programming World

This fact might disturb you that where women are moving in every direction ahead, but in the programming industry number of female developers is decreasing rapidly. Especially in the STEM workforce involvement of women has been decreasing as compared to the previous years.

Not only females are not interested in the programming industry, but they are leaving their jobs as well. That’s a disturbing fact because it is expected that by 2020 only in North America 1.7 million jobs in the computer sector will be available. So, when half of the world’s population isn’t going to participate in this field, then how can these jobs can be achieved. That’s why it’s important to understand the reasons behind the downfall of women in computer science


If we study the past of the computer science industry, then it will take us to the 1800s to meet Ada Lovelace, the first computer programmer. She is an important part of history, she began using the analytical machine to translate mathematical documents. Later, that became the first computer which is used in aviation and the military.

The downfall of females in the computer programming industry was not like this from the beginning. In the 1960s, the cosmopolitan magazine even dedicates an article to the women programmers saying that, “women are natural at computer programming.” In fact, some of the young talented female programmers from the University of Pennsylvania hired to do a project for ENIAC to set up the first electronic computer.

For numerous years, females have been dominating the computer programming field, even programming jobs were seen as the feminine jobs like secretarial work, filling, etc.

What Changes?

Well, the intellectual challenge of computer code came and all things changed from there. It was no longer mundane programming which was associated with other clerical work. So, the stereotypes became overpowering as the male math brain was more required in the programming.

There were additional tools to simplify the hiring process in the 1960s come which was another strike for the females. These tools were based on the aptitude tests that involved specific math and problem-solving practice of men was higher at that time as they were taught it in the school. There was another personality test that was used to find antisocial and introvert behaviors. And, then originated the stereotype of the anti-social computer geek and until now has effectively scared away most females from the profession.

Present & Future

The studies have been proving the fact that society isn’t still making it easier for young girls to enter the computer science field. There isn’t any solid reason behind it found, but a theory says that programmers are anti-social or unimaginative and hence girls remain uninterested. Moreover, people just want to follow the stereotype format and want to study the courses which are prominently learned by stereotypes. This is why still, 18% of women dare enough to adopt a computer science major. However, we can change this stereotypes behavior for the future female generation by;

  • Education about technical fields must be given to the girls from childhood.
  • Young women should be exposed to the technical fields in the formal classroom environment.
  • More initiative should be done to hire women in the workplace. Make technology position seem more desirable for a young lady.

There’s no question, in our mind today that when you tell someone to think of a computer programmer then the image of a nerdy male pops up. Well, there are few things that need to change on the social level, if want to see female in the technology industry. So, it’s our duty to encourage females to become part of the technological future.
